Congress returns as tight deadlines loom

The United States and Iran exchanged fire over the weekend amid tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, according to NPR. Congress returns from recess this week facing tight deadlines, the outlet reported.

The weekend strikes followed President Donald Trump’s declaration earlier this month that the U.S.-Iran ceasefire was over, according to Politico. The ceasefire, according to Wikipedia, was brokered by Pakistan in April and brought a temporary halt to a conflict that began after the U.S. launched a military campaign against Iran in late February, as MSI previously reported.

Politico reported that Senate Democrats have been forcing votes on war powers measures to pressure Republicans. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, after Trump said the ceasefire had ended, told Politico that Democrats are “united in our efforts to end this illegal war immediately and permanently.”

According to Politico, the conflict has also divided Republicans, with some lawmakers weighing whether to back the president’s approach or express concern about the war’s cost and duration ahead of the November midterm elections, in which control of Congress is at stake.
