  • Gloria Steinem, the writer and activist who co-founded Ms. magazine and became a central figure of the U.S. women's liberation movement, has died at 92 at her home in New York City.
  • Her foundation announced the death on Instagram, saying she "passed away peacefully" and was "surrounded by many who loved her," and that she "continued working for equality until the very end."
  • Steinem co-founded Ms. magazine and the National Women's Political Caucus, and campaigned for abortion rights, the Equal Rights Amendment, equal pay, and same-sex marriage.
  • President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013, crediting her work with giving women "the respect and opportunities that they deserve."
