Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was admitted to a hospital on Sunday morning, a spokesperson said in a statement, adding that he is receiving “excellent care.” The spokesperson did not respond to questions about McConnell’s current condition or what prompted the admission.
McConnell, 84, has faced a series of health challenges in recent years that have intensified scrutiny of his ability to serve. In February, he was hospitalized for eight days after experiencing what a spokesperson described as “flu-like symptoms.” He has also frozen up and become unresponsive during several press engagements.
Since 2023, McConnell has fallen multiple times, according to sources. That year, he sustained a concussion and broken ribs after a fall at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington, D.C. He used a wheelchair after the injury, which a spokesperson said at the time was “purely as a precautionary measure.”
McConnell reportedly tripped and fell at least two more times in 2023, including during an international trip to meet with then-Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and while getting off a plane in Washington, D.C., a source told CNN.
McConnell’s current Senate term ends in January 2027. His health has become a recurring subject of political discussion in Kentucky, where candidates in the state’s Republican primary have navigated between expressing loyalty to the longtime senator and appealing to the party’s Trump-aligned wing.
