  • The Supreme Court's June 29 ruling in Trump v Slaughter overturned a 91-year-old precedent and gave the president free rein to fire members of independent federal agencies.
  • Federal Trade Commission Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter, one of the plaintiffs in the case, called the decision "a dagger in the heart" of the civil service and said it opens agencies to pay-to-play politics.
  • Cathy Harris, fired from the Merit Systems Protection Board, said the ruling returns government to a patronage system where workers can be fired for partisan reasons without protections.
  • The Trump administration has fired more than 50 officials from federal agencies since January 2025, and fired officials said the ruling leaves remaining government workers without employment protections.
