  • The Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights filed a lawsuit Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Washington seeking to block the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from using federal databases the group alleges are being used to target naturalized citizens eligible to vote.
  • The complaint names DHS and the U.S. Justice Department and alleges the federal government is interfering with fair elections by using inaccurate federal databases in an attempt to buttress allegations of voter fraud.
  • The UCLA Voting Rights Project filed the suit on the coalition's behalf.
  • Coalition executive director Angelica Salas told reporters at a Los Angeles news conference that the federal government is engaging in an "attack on the freedom to vote" and called the action "voter intimidation."
  • Xavier Becerra, the Democratic nominee for California governor and a senior adviser to the voting project, said the federal effort to interfere with the right to vote is intentional.
  • The lawsuit is part of a series of legal moves by states, including California, to push back against federal election-related actions that, the suit and state filings contend, could create confusion during the midterm elections.

US deports Afghan granted court protection to Central African Republic
  • A U.S. deportation flight carrying dozens of people, including an Afghan man in his early twenties, landed in Bangui, Central African Republic, on Saturday.
  • A U.S. immigration judge had previously granted the man protection against deportation to Afghanistan, his lawyer said, because of Taliban threats tied to his brothers' work alongside U.S. forces.
  • The flight carried 12 Afghans, eight Iranians and several people from Nepal and Nicaragua, according to Human Rights First policy director Savi Arvey.
  • Advocates say the Trump administration has used often-secret bilateral agreements to deport thousands of people to roughly two dozen third countries as it pursues expanded immigration enforcement.
