Maldives airport funnels restricted Western goods to Russia, records show

• The Wall Street Journal reported that local logistics firms at Malé's airport help move hundreds of millions of dollars in restricted Western goods onto daily Aeroflot flights to Moscow by altering shipping documents so cargo never formally enters Maldivian customs.
• German company Kraemer Mining sold roughly €9,000 in equipment to a Kyrgyz buyer in May 2024; the goods were routed through Malé and onto an Aeroflot flight, with a second air waybill listing a Russian recipient and omitting the original seller, according to documents reviewed by the Journal.
• Russian imports from the Maldives surged from under $7 million in 2021 to more than $630 million in 2022, according to Import Genius, while Maldives customs data records only $2,300 of tuna and $25 in leaflets exported to Russia between 2022 and 2025.
