Police sources identify victim as off-duty Con Edison employee Koran Irvine

Koran Irvine, a 46-year-old off-duty employee of the Con Edison power utility, was killed in his car while driving across the George Washington Bridge in New York City on Tuesday evening, according to multiple reports.

Con Edison released a statement mourning its employee’s death. The utility said, “We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of a member of the Con Edison family in this senseless act of violence. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues, and everyone who knew and loved him.”

New York City and New York-New Jersey Port Authority police said Wednesday that they were searching for a suspect. Police said the suspected shooter fled the scene after the incident.

The shooting forced a closure of the George Washington Bridge until 1 a.m. Wednesday. UPI described the bridge as the world’s busiest.

New York City and New York-New Jersey Port Authority police had not immediately released a description of a possible suspect or vehicle.

An initial investigation of the Tuesday-evening incident led authorities to believe the 46-year-old victim died when he was shot through his window by the occupant of another vehicle following a near collision on the bridge, police sources told The New York Times, 1010 WINS and WNBC-TV.

Multiple reports characterized the incident as an apparent road-rage shooting.

The reported shooting happened near the 179th Street ramp on the upper level of the double-decker bridge. The bridge spans the Hudson River, connecting New York with New Jersey.
