Mayor says five-year-old was in car when ICE fired multiple rounds
An ICE agent shot a man in the Bronx on Thursday during a targeted enforcement operation, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed. The man is alive and at a local hospital, DHS said.
DHS, which runs ICE, said in a statement that the agent “discharged his weapon” during “a targeted enforcement operation… to arrest a criminal illegal alien.”
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the incident as “an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation” in a statement Thursday. “Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a five-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds,” Mamdani said. He added, “We believe the child was physically unharmed.”
The BBC said it has approached DHS for comment on Mamdani’s remarks.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said New Yorkers were “outraged tonight” and called on federal authorities to provide answers “immediately.”
