Hochul says she expects full federal accounting of shooting
Federal agents shot a person in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx on Thursday afternoon, according to the New York Police Department. The NYPD said the individual was conscious and taken to a hospital, and the department did not specify which federal agency carried out the shooting.
The shooting occurred at approximately 4 p.m. The NYPD said in a brief statement Thursday evening that its officers were not on the scene at the time of the shooting.
The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to an inquiry on Thursday evening. The NYPD has not specified which federal agency carried out the shooting.
Reporting on the immediate sequence of events drew on witness video reviewed by other outlets. The New York Times reported that footage appeared to show several agents in the middle of a Marble Hill street in the aftermath, with one armed and another restraining a man on the ground. The City Reporter, a local outlet, said its own video showed a crowd gathered at the scene and NYPD officers appearing to carry a man into the back of a vehicle.
The NYPD’s statement was brief and did not name the federal agency involved. Beyond the NYPD’s initial statement, the early public account drew on Hochul’s statement and on witness video reviewed by The New York Times and The City Reporter.
Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, said in a written statement on Thursday that she had been briefed on the shooting. “We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident,” Hochul wrote. “New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.”
By Thursday evening, the public record remained limited. The NYPD’s initial statement said only that the individual was conscious and taken to a hospital and did not specify which federal agency carried out the shooting. The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to an inquiry on Thursday evening. Further reporting on the scene drew on witness video reviewed by The New York Times and The City Reporter.
