  • Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said any future Canada-US trade pact must include tariff-level assurances that would not be subject to unilateral change.
  • Carney said the absence of those assurances triggered the collapse of negotiations last month and the imposition of new U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods.
  • The White House said Canada rejected the most generous trade deal offered to any U.S. trading partner and made further demands without offering concessions in return.
  • Carney's remarks offered further elaboration of why negotiations collapsed after officials had expressed optimism a deal was imminent.
  • Canada has scheduled retaliatory tariffs to take effect Tuesday, and President Trump has threatened a 50% tariff on Canadian-made vehicles and auto parts starting Jan. 1.

  • House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries referred Reps. Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington to the Democratic caucus's committee on caucus rules after the two backed a Republican procedural rule on Tuesday that had been poised to fail.
  • The vote passed 210 to 208, with Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez supplying the decisive votes that spared Speaker Mike Johnson a public defeat.
  • The rule advanced a GOP resolution condemning socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America, alongside a non-binding statement backing President Donald Trump's Save Act voting legislation.
  • Golden said he broke ranks to clear his bipartisan bill shielding Maine's lobster industry from federal whale-protection regulations.
  • Jeffries had spent recent weeks publicly feuding with the party's progressive wing over streamer Hasan Piker when the center-right rebellion landed.
  • Axios reported that stripping Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez of committee assignments was among the disciplinary options under discussion.
