Carney announces dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs after 50% US levy takes effect
President Donald Trump accused Canada on Sunday of wanting “the benefits of being a State, without being one” as trade tensions between the U.S. and its northern neighbor escalated, after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs. The Canadian response came as the Trump administration’s 50% duties on Canadian goods took effect.
“Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!,” Trump wrote on social media overnight. He added in the same post: “They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!”
Carney told a press conference that his government would “match Washington’s new tariffs dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.” He said Ottawa is “reluctantly” taking this step.
Carney said further details on the retaliatory tariffs would be released in the “coming days,” with the levies targeting steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. The retaliatory measures are set to take effect next month.
Trump has previously discussed making Canada the 51st state, which Canadian leaders have rejected.
