Mayor seeks local role in investigation; chief says possible foot pursuit
Later in the afternoon, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers fired pepper balls at some protesters who allegedly crossed the street toward the scene of Sunday’s shooting of a man by a federal immigration agent in Austin, Texas, state and local officials said.
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson said he had requested that local officials be part of the investigation into the shooting, which occurred around 12:56 p.m. CDT, according to Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz. Watson said the man was in serious but stable condition, and said he did not know the man’s nationality. Watson said he was “very angry” about the shooting but “not surprised” because of earlier Immigration and Customs Enforcement-related shootings elsewhere in the country.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said a foot pursuit may have occurred, but the information was still preliminary. The Austin Police Department said its officers were not involved in the shooting.
Luckritz told a news conference that he believed the unidentified man had been shot once in the torso.
ICE has not commented publicly on the shooting.
