Cellphone video captures three gunshots in Marquette neighborhood
A Madison police officer fatally shot a man who had injured him with a knife while resisting arrest Wednesday afternoon, Police Chief John Patterson said at a news conference.
The shooting occurred on a city street in a popular neighborhood lined with restaurants, bars, shops and residential homes, less than two miles from the state Capitol. Footage of the incident shows numerous cars stopped in the intersection with people watching as it unfolded.
Cellphone video of the shooting circulated on social media shortly after the incident. Three gunshots can be heard on the recording. Patterson stressed at the news conference that the footage circulating was just one perspective of what happened.
Patterson said the officer who was injured by the knife was the same officer who then shot the man. Four Madison Police Department officers were involved in the incident, and only one officer fired their weapon, officials said.
The man, described by Patterson as being in his 30s, died. Officers performed lifesaving measures on the man before he was taken to a hospital, Patterson said. Police did not release the man’s name but said his family had been notified.
“I want to take a moment to honestly and sincerely offer my heartfelt sympathies to his family for this loss,” Patterson said.
