Surveillance footage shows Mercedes hurtling through intersection, crashing into waiting vehicles

The crash occurred shortly after 2 p.m. in the Allerton neighborhood when a white Mercedes-Benz barreled through a busy intersection, struck a group of pedestrians in a crosswalk and slammed into multiple vehicles waiting at a traffic light, according to The Guardian, News 12 and the New York Post.

Sources told the Post that the four women, ranging in age from 50 to 60, were walking through the crosswalk when the Mercedes struck them. The victims were transported to Jacobi Medical Center, where one woman was pronounced dead. Two others were reported in critical condition, and a fourth was expected to survive, according to the Post.

The FDNY said emergency medical crews treated nine people in the aftermath of the crash, according to News 12. Surveillance footage obtained by that outlet captured the Mercedes hurtling through the intersection, striking pedestrians in the crosswalk before crashing into the waiting vehicles.

According to the NYPD’s preliminary findings, the Mercedes rear-ended two vehicles with such force that both cars were pushed into two additional vehicles, The Guardian reported. The driver, who suffered minor injuries and remained conscious and alert, reportedly told a witness he had been attempting to beat the traffic light, the Post said.
