Officer on scene recovers firearm; no suspects in custody

Police responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 10:37 pm Saturday on West 31st Street in the Brooklyn neighborhood, the NYPD said in a statement to ABC News.

The victims included two men, two women, and four children, ages 14, 12, 7, and 6, according to the NYPD through ABC News. Seven of the at least eight people shot were in stable condition after being taken to hospitals, the statement said. A 21-year-old woman remained in critical condition.

Officers recovered a firearm at the scene, police said. No arrests had been made as of Sunday morning, and the NYPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

The shooting occurred as the United States marked the 250th anniversary of its independence on July 4, 2026.
