The Manhattan Theatre Club announced the casting of Lauren Ambrose and Tom Riley for the New York premiere of “The Unbelievers,” a play by Nick Payne. The production is set to begin previews Oct. 13 at New York City Center Stage II under the direction of Knud Adams.

According to the Manhattan Theatre Club’s synopsis, the play centers on Miriam and David, performed by Ambrose and Riley respectively, whose teenage son vanishes suddenly. “Faith means believing in something. Especially when it feels impossible,” the theater said in a description of the show. “As the years go by and the mystery of the sudden disappearance of Miriam and David’s teenage son remains unsolved, their blended family must figure out how to go on, relearning how to live through the ups and downs of ordinary days in their altered world.”

Ambrose is widely recognized for her television work on “Six Feet Under,” “Servant,” and “Yellowjackets.” Riley’s credits include the series “Down Cemetery Road” and “Da Vinci’s Demons.” The play marks a New York stage return for both actors. No additional casting has been announced.
