Lindsey Graham and Wally Funk are among people who died in July

Funk reached space at 82 after being barred from astronaut roles

The Associated Press included Graham and Funk in a roundup of people who died in July. The report was published Aug. 6 as part of coverage of people who have died in 2026.

Graham was a Republican in the U.S. Senate. The AP described him as known for a Southern drawl, political flexibility and hawkish foreign policy, and said he could befriend colleagues of different political persuasions.

Graham ran for president in 2016 while opposing Donald Trump. He later became an ally of Trump after Trump became president, according to the AP.

The AP said Graham died from a tear in his aorta. The report did not provide additional details about his death.

Funk’s path to space included participation in the Mercury 13 program during the 1960s. Funk and other female pilots underwent astronaut training but were not allowed to become astronauts.

In 2021, Funk joined Amazon founder Jeff Bezos on a Blue Origin rocket. At age 82, she became the oldest woman to go into space, according to the AP.

The roundup also named Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, a former ruler of Qatar; singer Bonnie Tyler; former CIA director R. James Woolsey; West Indian cricketer Garry Sobers; and actor Sam Neill.
