Defend the Vote march set for 63rd anniversary of MLK’s 1963 march

Sharpton’s National Action Network said Tuesday that the event, named “March on Washington 2026: Defend the Vote,” will take place Aug. 28, exactly 63 years after the original March on Washington.

Martin Luther King III issued a statement calling the march both a remembrance and a call to action.

“Defending the vote means defending the foundation of our democracy,” King III said. “Sixty-three years after my father stood at the Lincoln Memorial, we are called to march again, not only in remembrance, but in action.”

The coalition organizing the march includes several prominent civil rights organizations. The NAACP, the National Urban League and the League of United Latin American Citizens are among the groups expected to assemble in the nation’s capital for the event, according to the announcement.

Organizers said the march will draw civil rights and faith leaders as well as community organizers. Specific details about the route in Washington and other logistical arrangements are pending and will be announced at a later date.
