Authorities in Greece detained 313 people in a raid on the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki campus after riot police were attacked by a mob hurling more than 100 Molotov cocktails, Greek police said Saturday.

Greek police said roving groups of people wearing hoods emerged from inside the campus in the predawn hours Saturday to attack a squad of riot police. Police said the unit is usually deployed some distance from the campus to manage disturbances after all-night parties held on university grounds.

Police said the attack involved more than 100 Molotov cocktails, and riot officers used tear gas and stun grenades to push back the attackers. An officer was taken to a military hospital for burns to his face and leg, and police said a 21-year-old civilian was treated for respiratory problems.

After the clash, Greek authorities carried out a raid on the university campus and detained 313 people. Police said all 313 detainees were released without being charged.

The university said in a statement that off-campus “extremists” together with some individuals from within university grounds committed the attacks. It said an investigation is underway to determine whether any students took part, and it added that no permission had been granted for any party to take place on university grounds.
