The City of Marshfield issued a public alert this week after Violet, a skunk who has lived at Wildwood Zoo for the past two years, escaped from her enclosure. Officials said the escape occurred earlier this week and that they believe the enclosure’s foundation was compromised by the elements.

“At this time, we believe a combination of this year’s flash flooding and heavy snowfall may have deteriorated a portion of the exhibit’s foundation, creating an opening through which Violet was able to escape,” officials wrote in the announcement.

Zookeepers also said the current mating season for striped skunks may have played a role in Violet’s departure.

Officials emphasized that Violet poses no danger to the public. “Violet is not considered a dangerous animal. She has been descented, up to date with her rabies shot, and was raised in human care her entire life, and is accustomed to the routines of a zoological setting,” the announcement said.

Despite the skunk’s familiarity with humans, officials warned that Violet should not be approached or handled by strangers. Residents who spot the skunk are asked to contact local police. “Zoo staff have begun trapping operations and will continue search efforts for the foreseeable future,” officials wrote.
