Taylor Swift made history as the youngest woman inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 12, delivering an emotional 21-minute speech at the New York ceremony. She was introduced by filmmaker Steven Spielberg, whom she described as a hero whose storytelling shaped her own.

Swift, 36, became the second-youngest person ever inducted into the Hall of Fame, after Stevie Wonder, who joined at 33. Her family moved from Pennsylvania to Nashville, the “songwriting capital of the world,” when she was 14, a decision she credited for her career. “It couldn’t have been easy for my parents and my brother to just pick up and move our entire family,” Swift said.

The singer said songwriting was the only part of her career that came instinctually. “No-one taught me how to do it. I had to be taught how to entertain a crowd, and learn choreography, and be less annoying and navigate the industry and fiercely protect my own sanity through difficult lessons and massive amounts of trial and error and chaos and calamity,” she told the audience.

The honor follows a period of commercial dominance. Swift’s most recent album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” released in October, broke her own sales record. She is the first performer to win the Grammy Award for album of the year four times.

Her fiance, NFL star Travis Kelce, attended the ceremony, as rumors swirl that the couple will marry next month. She joins fewer than 500 songwriters inducted since the Hall of Fame was founded in 1969.

Key tracks recognized by the Hall of Fame include “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version),” “Blank Space,” “Anti-Hero,” “Love Story,” and “The Last Great American Dynasty.”

Other inductees at the ceremony included Alanis Morissette, Kenny Loggins, and Kiss members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Also joining were songwriter Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, who has written for Beyoncé and Rihanna; Walter Afanasieff, known for his work with Mariah Carey; Terry Britten; and Graham Lyle, who co-wrote Turner’s “What’s Love Got to Do with It?”

Swift has released 12 studio albums and four re-recorded “Taylor’s Version” albums, establishing herself as one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
