Death is first ICE detention accident ruled during Trump’s second term
Mohammad Nazeer Paktiawal died on March 14 at a Dallas hospital, one day after Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained him for deportation proceedings, according to his death certificate. The document, obtained by the Associated Press, states that Paktiawal suffered an adverse drug reaction to an unidentified substance, which caused anaphylaxis and worsened his asthma. The death was ruled an accident.
Paktiawal had fought alongside U.S. Special Forces in Afghanistan for a decade, according to AP reporting. His sudden death in ICE custody has drawn outrage, according to the AP.
The AP has tracked more than 50 deaths in ICE detention during Trump’s second term. Paktiawal’s is the first to be classified as an accident. Most of the other deaths have been attributed to natural causes or suicide.
