Mayor warns New Yorkers to leave basements amid floodwaters
Rounds of storms brought flooding rain to parts of New York City, Philadelphia and New Jersey on Monday, breaking a heat wave that had gripped the region. Flash flood warnings were issued for parts of the area as the storms moved through.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani warned residents of basement apartments to leave immediately if they saw water rising in their homes. Mamdani on Sunday urged residents to guard against heatstroke and shared locations of pools and cooling centers. On Monday, he warned people in basement apartments to evacuate if they saw water rising.
In Ocean Township, New Jersey, a section of the roof at a BJ’s Wholesale Club collapsed as floodwaters rushed through the store, the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office said. A shopper, a shopping cart and tables of baked goods slid through the water. Two people were briefly trapped in the debris but freed themselves; no injuries were reported.
Heavy rain stranded cars on flooded highways across northern New Jersey. Water sloshed into businesses and at least one hospital.
