Fire chief describes crash scene as ‘like a war scene’
The crash occurred shortly before 6 p.m. in the 1500 block of Reisterstown Road, according to fire officials. A bus operated by the Maryland Transportation Administration collided with a building occupied by FedEx, causing entrapment and multiple injuries. The cause remained under investigation Thursday night.
Fire Chief Joe Dixon told reporters at a press conference that the scene was extensive, spanning several streets. “It’s more like a war scene,” he said. About 15 ambulances and 100 first responders were dispatched, according to officials. The department’s online statement confirmed at least 33 patients had been transported, including one “critical patient” who was airlifted to a medical facility.
It was not immediately clear how many of the injured were in private vehicles versus on the bus. The crash involved about a dozen vehicles, Dixon said. The building the bus struck was occupied by FedEx, according to photos posted by the fire department.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said in a statement that he and his wife Dawn were “keeping everyone impacted in our hearts and prayers.” He thanked first responders “who acted with speed and skill to ensure the safety of our neighbors” and said his administration had been “in close coordination with local officials to provide any support needed on the ground.” Baltimore County Councilman Julian Jones also issued a statement, saying a “coordinated emergency response is well underway” and urging residents to “avoid the area and allow emergency crews the space they need to do their work safely.”
A Family Information Center line was opened by the fire department for loved ones to receive official updates. Officials said the investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing.
