Alleged confidential information taken to OpenAI
Apple has sued OpenAI, accusing the artificial-intelligence company of benefiting from trade secrets that former Apple employees took with them when they joined the competitor, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal published July 10.
The lawsuit alleges that employees who left Apple for OpenAI brought confidential information, the Journal reported. OpenAI has denied the allegations, the news outlet said.
The legal action reflects how the relationship between the two companies has rapidly deteriorated since 2024, when they signed a deal to have ChatGPT work with Apple’s Siri chatbot, according to the Journal’s reporting.
Apple’s suit comes as OpenAI pursues its own hardware strategy. The company’s effort to develop its own devices is part of a crucial strategic push to reach consumers directly, rather than relying on distribution through other companies’ devices, according to the Journal’s reporting.
