Isaac Argro shot Azsia Johnson at point-blank range near Manhattan playground
A New York man was sentenced Tuesday to 25 years to life in prison for the 2022 murder of his ex-girlfriend after being convicted in May of shooting her in the head as she pushed their infant daughter in a stroller on a street near a Manhattan playground.
Isaac Argro, 26, was sentenced by a Manhattan court after a jury found him guilty of murder in the death of Azsia Johnson, 20, prosecutors said. A message seeking comment was sent to a lawyer for Argro.
Prosecutors said Argro persuaded Johnson to meet him on June 29, 2022, under the pretense that he wanted to give her items for their 3-month-old daughter. Johnson told a relative by text about the meeting, according to prosecutors.
When Johnson arrived pushing the stroller, Argro was waiting for her, prosecutors said. He shot her in the temple at point-blank range, they said. The child was not injured.
The killing followed a period in which Argro had physically and emotionally abused Johnson, according to prosecutors. She had left him but was “determined to give co-parenting a try,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement this spring.
“Azsia Johnson was a loving parent who left an abusive relationship and began to rebuild her life,” Bragg said in a statement after the sentencing Tuesday. “Her dreams of moving forward were brought to a horrific end” by Argro.
