Rescue vessels comb bay for missing after Volare capsizes

The search for the three missing people continued Wednesday as authorities described the vessel and the sequence of the accident. San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen said the boat, a 50-foot (15-meter) pleasure vessel with a cabin and an upper deck named Volare, took on water and capsized.

Crispen said the boat began taking on water and turned over in the bay. When rescuers reached the site, he said, the engine was still running and spilling fuel.

The vessel was registered in Stockton, California, according to fire department Lt. Mariano Elias.

The accident occurred Tuesday afternoon as the boat was involved in a memorial service on the bay. Sixteen people were rescued from the water. One person was pulled from the water but later died, Crispen said. A dog aboard the boat also died.

Video from Tuesday showed rescue boats gathered around the largely submerged vessel while debris floated nearby. Rescue vessels continued searching the waters Wednesday as authorities attempted to locate the three missing individuals.
