Iran war options remain on table as president prepares address

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump will deliver a primetime address to the nation Thursday evening at 9 p.m. ET. Trump has said the speech will focus on elections and contain “really big news” and a “very big announcement.”

Trump said the address would focus on “free and fair elections,” according to the Wall Street Journal. The Journal reported that “a lot of his past allegations, especially related to 2020, have already been litigated (literally).”

The address comes as Trump weighs options for expanded military operations against Iran. According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump is leaning toward expanded military operations and is weighing options that include stepping up airstrikes, sending ground forces to take Iranian islands near the Strait of Hormuz, and bombing a fortified site that could harbor covert nuclear work. The Journal reported that Trump has said he prefers a diplomatic resolution and has not made a final decision on next steps.

Before the address, Trump is scheduled to meet with Sen. Darline Graham, the late Sen. Lindsey Graham’s sister, at 9:30 a.m. ET, and with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele at 11 a.m.
