Antelope Point dock left protruding as lake recedes
At the Antelope Point Marina on Lake Powell, a dock built for use during higher water levels now extends above the surface, with visitors passing beneath it on a golf cart in mid-July.
The scene reflects the conditions facing recreational boaters this year, according to longtime visitor Matt Barrett, who said the reservoir has dropped nearly every year since he began making annual treks to the Utah-Arizona border around 2013.
Some very snowy winters in prior years helped the reservoir rebound quickly, Barrett said, but this year was far from that.
“We need another one of those fast,” Barrett said. “A few of those fast.”
Barrett said the low water has made it harder for people to reach the water because “all the other boat ramps are dried up.” He planned to spend days with his wife boating and camping on the lake.
“So it’s kind of a big deal when the water is low, especially for loading and unloading,” Barrett said.
