Roosters appear as far as New Zealand in show of support
David and Sara LeBlanc had maintained a rotating display of the roughly 6-foot-tall metal ornaments on their Ogunquit lawn. Town officials concluded the statues constituted impermissible advertising for The Omelette Factory, the restaurant attached to the family’s home.
The LeBlancs initially refused to comply with the removal order. The couple said the roosters were intended to comfort their daughter Pyper, who is autistic, and were not a commercial sign for the business.
Tin roosters have since appeared on private lawns in communities along the Maine coast and have been documented by supporters in New Zealand, according to the Associated Press. AP photographs show roosters flanking Route 1 in Wells, Maine, a town bordering Ogunquit.
