His father, convicted for providing the weapon, to be sentenced next week
Colt Gray, now 16, was set to stand trial in mid-October in Columbia County after a judge granted a defense motion for a change of venue. But the scheduling of Friday’s hearing before Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm raised the possibility that Gray could enter a new plea and avoid a trial. MSI previously reported that court filings showed Gray was expected to change his plea from not guilty, citing documents filed in the case.
The hearing has been termed a “Non-Negotiated Plea and Sentencing Hearing,” meaning that no agreement on a sentence has been reached between prosecutors and Gray’s defense team. If Gray pleads guilty, Judge Primm would determine the punishment.
The case stems from the Sept. 4, 2024, attack at Apalachee High School, about 45 miles northeast of Atlanta, where Gray is accused of using an assault-style rifle to open fire, killing two students and two teachers and wounding several others.
In March, a jury convicted Colin Gray, the teenager’s father, on charges including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors said the elder Gray gave his son the rifle used in the shooting. He is scheduled to be sentenced next week.
