Carter Camacho also pleads guilty to child pornography charge
Carter Camacho, 18, of Smyrna, Georgia, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to two counts stemming from his Feb. 17 arrest at the U.S. Capitol, according to court records. He admitted to illegally possessing a firearm on Capitol grounds and to receipt or distribution of child pornography.
Camacho was wearing body armor and camouflage clothing when he ran toward the Capitol carrying a loaded shotgun, according to federal prosecutors. Police officers apprehended him before he entered the building, and no one was injured.
Prosecutors said Camacho told officers after his arrest that he had intended to confront members of Congress and “scare them into speaking the truth.”
The child pornography charge arose from a search of Camacho’s phone conducted after his arrest, court records show.
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta is scheduled to sentence Camacho on Dec. 8 in Washington, D.C. Camacho has remained in custody since the day of his arrest.
