Indiana Senate President Pro Tem Rodric Bray announced Friday he will step down as the chamber’s top Republican, following the primary defeats of six GOP incumbents who opposed President Donald Trump’s congressional redistricting push.

Bray voted against the redistricting plan in December after stating for weeks that it did not have enough support to pass, according to the Associated Press. The rejection came after intense lobbying by Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and national conservative groups.

Bray, who has held the leadership post since 2018, said he will not seek reelection to the position when Senate Republicans choose their leaders in November. He will remain in the Senate through 2028 but will no longer serve as the chamber’s top Republican.
