Collins, Murkowski, and Paul side with Democrats; Fetterman votes with GOP
The Senate on Thursday defeated a war powers resolution that would have directed President Donald Trump to end U.S. military operations against Iran, as the measure fell short 49-50.
The vote was the latest congressional attempt to reassert legislative authority over the use of military force against Iran, according to The Guardian. The resolution, which needed a simple majority to pass, failed when 50 senators voted against it and 49 voted in favor, with one senator absent — Mitch McConnell, who has not returned to the Capitol since a fall in June, according to The Guardian.
Three Republican senators — Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Rand Paul — joined all but one Democrat in supporting the measure. Democratic Senator John Fetterman voted with the Republican majority to sink the resolution.
