Michigan voters will decide a competitive Democratic U.S. Senate primary Tuesday between U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens and former Detroit public health official Abdul El-Sayed. The race to replace Democratic U.S. Sen. Gary Peters carries implications for control of the U.S. Senate next year, according to the Associated Press.
Progressives recently scored several electoral victories, including the election of democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani as New York City’s mayor and multiple U.S. House primaries in which progressive candidates defeated longtime Democratic incumbents, the AP reported. Those contests were all waged on safe, heavily Democratic turf.
The AP also reported that the contest involves the influence of pro-Israel organizations.
Michigan is one of the nation’s most competitive electoral battlegrounds, having been decided by narrow margins in each of the last three presidential elections. In 2026, the state ballot also includes races for governor, the U.S. House, and the state Legislature.
