Freedom 250 Grand Prix is scheduled for Aug. 22 and 23
The Freedom 250 Grand Prix will bring open-wheel race cars to Washington for a street race organized by Trump. The event is scheduled for Aug. 22 and 23.
According to an Associated Press report, the cars typically reach street-course speeds approaching 200 mph. That is nearly eight times the posted speed limit along Pennsylvania Avenue, which is 25 mph.
The vehicles also produce enough torque to tear off manhole covers, according to the report.
Trump hosted an IndyCar pit crew at the White House while promoting the event. During the visit, he joked about the difference between racing speeds and ordinary traffic rules.
“If we did that during the regular day, I think people would be put in jail, perhaps for the rest of their lives,” Trump said.
The race is scheduled as part of events surrounding America’s 250th birthday. It will combine the White House, Pennsylvania Avenue and a major automobile race in Washington.
