Longtime Democratic congressman faces a congressional primary challenge
Five Democrats and four Republicans are seeking their parties’ nominations to succeed Hawaii Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke in Saturday’s state primary.
Luke pleaded not guilty in July to bribery charges stemming from her 2022 campaign, when she was a state lawmaker.
The office has previously been held by Democratic Gov. Josh Green and Democratic U.S. Sens. Mazie Hirono and Brian Schatz.
Hawaii elects its governor and lieutenant governor individually. The two offices do not run on the same ticket.
The primary also includes a challenge to a longtime Democratic congressman. The congressman supported one of President Donald Trump’s top legislative priorities.
