Authorities say they never demand money over missed jury duty
Authorities warn they “won’t call you to threaten arrest or demand money over missed jury duty,” The Wall Street Journal reported.
A new type of scam built around missed jury duty, however, is costing victims thousands of dollars, according to the Journal. Callers “armed with specific details about their potential victims” apply “tremendous pressure to comply with seemingly legitimate demands,” the Journal said.
The Journal’s 10-Point newsletter retraced “one woman’s 10-hour ordeal that cost her $25,000.”
The Journal described the calls as the “Jury Duty” Scam, a racket in which detailed knowledge about the target gives demands the appearance of legitimacy — including threats that no court would ever make.
