Three-day manhunt ends in Schoharie County
New York State Police said early Sunday that Thomas David Ryan, 32, was taken into police custody, ending a three-day manhunt for a man accused of killing his father and setting fire to the man’s home. The agency said the active search in the Gilboa area of Schoharie County has concluded.
Little information about the arrest has been made public. “The New York State Police thanks the public and our law enforcement partners for their assistance,” the agency said in an early Sunday statement.
Authorities had been searching for Thomas, of Greenville, N.Y., since around 7:30 p.m. EDT Thursday, when state police responded to reports of a structure fire at a residence on Greenville Turnpike in Greenville, located about 26 miles southwest of Albany.
After the fire was extinguished, a body, identified over the weekend as Robert Ryan, the 70-year-old father of Thomas, was located within the structure, New York State Police said. A preliminary investigation revealed that the fire had been deliberately set, the agency said.
Authorities said they believed Thomas was driving a 2016 gray Toyota Prius, and state police described him as “armed and dangerous.” They said he did not live with his father at the time of the homicide and was living a “transient lifestyle,” staying at shelters throughout the state.
A search of various counties was conducted, and members of the public with information on Thomas’s whereabouts were asked to come forward.
