NATO allies study gender-equal conscription as model
Denmark has shifted toward drafting women for military service, with mandatory conscription extended to 11 months from four, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The changes came amid the war in Ukraine and growing security pressures in the Arctic, according to the Journal.
NATO allies are seeking inspiration from Denmark’s gender-equal conscription program, the Journal said, with the program drawing interest as a possible model for allied militaries.
The Journal joined Danish recruits as they trained, filming the program for a video report published alongside its account.
The extension lengthens the military service Denmark requires of draftees, while the inclusion of women, for the first time, places men and women under the same mandatory-service obligation, according to the report.
The changes came as the war in Ukraine and growing security pressures in the Arctic drove Denmark to extend and broaden conscription, the Journal reported.
