Memorial remains outside Jackson house where body was found
Police are investigating the death of Tasia Fortune, whose body was found outside an abandoned house in Jackson, Mississippi. Fortune was 29 years old and Black.
Police have not indicated whether they consider Fortune’s death suspicious. They said they are actively working “to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.”
A week after Fortune’s body was found, a pink and white memorial stood in the overgrown backyard of the abandoned house, according to the Associated Press. Rainbow pinwheels, white flowers and teddy bears surrounded a photograph of Fortune.
Empty chip bags and discarded plastic bottles lay near the memorial. An entrance to the home stood open nearby, with a tarp, foam pad and other debris outside.
Fortune’s death comes as two other people have been found hanging from trees in Mississippi in less than a year, according to the Associated Press.
