Scott is unopposed for GOP nomination after winning 73% in 2024
Vermont voters will go to the polls Tuesday for a primary that will test whether Democrats can field a gubernatorial candidate with a realistic chance of defeating Republican Gov. Phil Scott.
Voters will also decide contested Democratic primaries for lieutenant governor and state auditor, and will choose a Republican nominee to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Becca Balint in November.
Scott received 73% of the vote in his 2024 reelection bid, improving upon the 69% he won in 2022, according to the Associated Press. He is one of only two Republican governors serving a state that Kamala Harris carried in the 2024 présidential election, and his large margins of victory have repeatedly frustrated Democratic efforts to recapture the governor’s mansion.
Scott has criticized President Donald Trump. He endorsed former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley for president during the 2024 Republican primaries, and he has said he voted for Harris over Trump in the 2024 general election and for Joe Biden in 2020.
Scott is unopposed for the Republican nomination, giving him a clear path to the general election while Democrats select their nominee.
