Mangione faces parallel federal and state prosecution in 2024 killing
Luigi Mangione is expected to enter a guilty plea Friday in federal court in connection with the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to The Associated Press. The person, who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly, cautioned that Mangione could still change his mind before the late-morning hearing.
Lawyers for Mangione and the Justice Department declined to comment ahead of the proceeding, which prosecutors and defense lawyers hastily requested earlier this week.
Mangione, 28, was charged by both federal and state prosecutors in the ambush of Thompson, 50, outside a New York City hotel on December 4, 2024, as the insurance executive walked to UnitedHealth Group’s annual investor conference. Previous plea talks in June broke down.
