University statement asks community to avoid area as investigation continues
A shooting involving multiple suspects left five people shot at Virginia State University and prompted a campus lockdown early Saturday, according to the university and county police.
Officers discovered five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside campus dormitories when they arrived, the Chesterfield County Police Department said. The shooting happened near the university’s Quad Annexes, and both campus police and county police are actively investigating.
All five victims were transported to hospitals. One person initially listed with life-threatening injuries has since been upgraded to critical condition, according to county police. The other victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The university said in a statement that the shooting involves “multiple suspects” and asked people to avoid the immediate area.
“VSU Police and the Chesterfield County Police Department are actively investigating,” the university statement said. “The campus community should continue to avoid the area and follow all law enforcement instructions.”
