Anne Smull says redrawing ‘feels sneaky and underhanded’
At a recent lunch at a cafe in Lincoln, a former agricultural town that has grown into a bedroom community at the edge of Sacramento, retired feedstore owner Anne Smull said she learned she could no longer vote for the man who currently represents her in Washington — Rep. Kevin Kiley.
“He believes in the same things I do,” Smull said of Kiley. The change of her district, she said, “feels sneaky and underhanded.”
The Associated Press reported that California Democrats sliced Kiley’s district into six parts — a move the wire service described as payback for Republican redistricting in Texas and elsewhere. The portion of the district containing Smull’s home was grafted onto a district based in the state’s wine country, an overwhelmingly Democratic seat.
The AP also reported that Kiley had left the Republican Party to try to survive the redistricting competition as he prepared for the new map.
