Wisconsin investigators identify eighteen additional cases in outbreak

Minnesota health officials issued a consumer warning on August 20 against eating alfalfa sprouts produced by Everything Sprouts of Minnesota. The products are sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands and have been distributed to both restaurants and grocery stores.

Minnesota health officials have linked the sprouts to 23 confirmed cases of foodborne illness in the state. Two of the Minnesota patients have been hospitalized. Both E. coli and salmonella infections have been identified among the cases.

Three E. coli strains have been confirmed among the Minnesota patients: STEC O168:H8, STEC O103:H25, and STEC O26:H11. Wisconsin investigators, as cited by Minnesota officials, have identified 18 additional cases linked to the same outbreak.

Minnesota health officials are advising consumers who have purchased alfalfa sprouts under either brand not to eat them.
