Deal resolves 2024 complaint alleging TikTok failed to comply with COPPA
The Justice Department and TikTok reached a $400 million settlement to resolve allegations the social-media company violated federal laws protecting the online privacy of children, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The agreement settles a complaint the Justice Department filed against TikTok in 2024. In that filing, the department alleged TikTok failed to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, the federal statute that governs how companies handle the personal data of minors online.
The law, commonly known as COPPA, requires internet companies to notify parents and obtain their consent before collecting personal information from children under the age of 13.
