Paxton faced impeachment and securities fraud charges
James Talarico, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in Texas, will ask a court on Wednesday to release depositions taken from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, his campaign confirmed, the Associated Press reported.
The depositions involve a civil case in which Unity Resources, a mineral assets company, was accused of fraud. Paxton was connected to Unity Resources but was not a defendant, and the case was settled, the AP reported.
According to the AP, the planned filing is part of an ongoing effort by Talarico to keep the focus on Paxton’s legal and political history in the Senate race. The AP also reported that Talarico, a Democratic state representative, is counting on voters recoiling from past accusations against Paxton, even though similar opposition tactics have failed in previous Texas campaigns.
In addition to seeking the depositions, Talarico recently resurfaced video showing Paxton pocketing an expensive pen at a courthouse security checkpoint. He has also talked about how Paxton was impeached — and later acquitted by the Texas Senate — and how he faced criminal securities fraud charges that ended with an agreement requiring restitution payments but no admission of guilt.
