Trial would start nearly 27 years after attacks; 2021 date was canceled
Schrama’s order was filed Wednesday. The three other defendants named alongside Mohammed are Walid bin Attash, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, and Mustafa al-Hawsawi, all of whom face charges in connection with the Sept. 11 plot.
If the trial proceeds on the new schedule, it would begin nearly 27 years after the attacks, replacing a 2021 date that was previously set and later canceled. The June 2028 date assumes each of the deadlines and milestones Schrama outlined is met; if any are missed, the start could slip further.
The order extends a prosecution in which the U.S. military and successive administrations have struggled for more than two decades to bring to justice the man charged with planning one of the deadliest attacks ever on the United States.
