Removal order followed missed July 22 immigration hearing
U.S. immigration officials arrested British commentator Milo Yiannopoulos on Thursday at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Immigration officials announced the arrest on Friday. DHS accused Yiannopoulos of overstaying after entering the United States legally in May 2019 through New York City, according to an emailed statement from a DHS spokesperson.
“He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws,” the spokesperson wrote.
An immigration judge had issued a final order of removal on July 22 after Yiannopoulos failed to appear for his immigration hearing, the spokesperson wrote in a separate email.
ICE’s online detainee locator does not specify where Yiannopoulos is being held. The locator directs family members and legal representatives to the agency’s office in Alexandria, Louisiana, which serves as a deportation hub for international flights.
